After closing to the public in March this year, Dumbleyung is one step closer to having its swimming pool back.
A project working group consisting of councillors and selected community members has chosen a preferred concept design for the pool which was deemed to be unserviceable earlier this year.
The Shire commissioned a geotechnical investigation of the site, with the results confirming the presence of reactive clay materials and significant water-logging within the Bennett Street site.
“The investigations also reveal there is significant deterioration in the pool structure that makes retention or reuse unviable,” the statement said.
“Together with the poor state and condition of the pool filtration system and plant room, the entire pool infrastructure is now considered unserviceable.”
The preferred concept design looks to replace the no longer usable pool facilities with a modernised plan that meets current standards.
This will be split into two funding stages with stage one including building a new kiosk, pool plant room, toilets and changeroom facilities on the north side of the pool site.
It is hoped the new building can act as a community gym while the pool is being built as part of stage two.
This will ensure there is access to a community health and fitness facility while the pool is out of action.
The expected cost of pool development comes in at $8.5 million for both stages.
The Shire has undertaken financial modelling to determine options to fund the swimming pool development.
Now the Shire is facing the hurdle of limited funding options in the current economic climate.
This means that the community of Dumbleyung could be without a pool for quite some time.
The Shire is seeking community feedback on the concept design work produced to date, including proposed next steps.
